Sebring ranked No. 3 in Florida's small citiesBy BARRY FOSTER News-Sun correspondentNewsSun.com
SEBRING The City on the Circle has been ranked third in a poll of the Top 16 Small Cities in Florida. The list was compiled by writers for www.citiesjournal.com .
It's hard to rank the best small Florida towns, since everyone puts a different priority on the aspects they most appreciate, the article points out.
Access to health care, proximity to the beach, average climate, nearness of large cities and airports, as well as cultural opportunities were listed as some of the possible reasons that localities were selected.
In fact, the lack of these things is listed as some of the most alluring features of the city best known for the sports car endurance race held here in the third week in March each year.
If one's goal is to enjoy the Florida sun far from the hassle of tourists and beaches, Sebring is the perfect choice, they write. The article points to the city's historic downtown area, calling it bucolic and cites a number of what are termed modest, holiday-specific events held throughout the year.
The article also claims that long-time residents boast of the absence of any interstates or major highways. They like the fact this serves as something of a buffer against the tourists and development that have changed so much of the traditional Florida environment.
No specific date for the research was indicated, however, it may not be the most recent available.
For instance, the writers talk about the American Le Mans Series when referencing the 12 Hours of Sebring that sanctioning body for the race went away more than a year ago.
Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Liz Barber was pleased about the designation.
I always knew Sebring is a great place to live, work and play, she said. It's great to see that we're also being recognized by others.
Ranking number one in the survey was Key West, followed by Bonita Springs. Rounding out the Top Five were Key Largo and Destin.
